What is cellophane paper used for?

It is widely used in the manufacture of adhesive tapes, having been largely replaced by other polymers with more appropriate qualities for such use. In addition to its use as food wrapping, it also has industrial uses, such as self-adhesive tapes and semi-permeable membranes used in certain types of batteries.

How is it made?

It consists of dissolving wood, cotton or hemp fibers in an alkali to make a solution called viscose, which is then extruded through a slit and submerged in an acid bath that converts it back into cellulose.
